In this document you will find step-by-step instructions on how to grant others, such as the Agility Trial Secretary, access to Online Plans. AKC will email you an access code that will allow you to manage your club officer list and/or event privileges. Then follow the instructions in the following document:
-
Thank you for your interest in AKC’s Online Entry Service. In the following downloadable document you will find a brief description of the many benefits this service provides to Exhibitors, Clubs, and Secretaries.
If you have any questions, email AKC's Online Entry Service department or call 919-816-3725.

When filling out your entry form, you must include the letters before the number. The below formula may be used in determining which designation should be added to the number:
- Use "ILP" when the dog's number is 199999 or less
- Use "PAL" when the dog's number is 200000 or greater
As of September 15, 2011:
Additionally, John Brading, Manager of Event Operations, reports they occasionally see "PALMA" or "MAPAL" designation. Please be aware that the Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) and Mixed Breed (MA) registration programs are separate. The above two designations are not valid. Either the dog has an AKC number with PAL followed by 5 numbers, or MA followed by 8 numbers. Please confirm the correct AKC number with the exhibitor if the preceding letters are omitted from the AKC number. -
A club can apply to hold an Agility trial by using AKC's online plans or by submitting a paper application.
If the club is unfamiliar with online plans or if they need to gain access to online plans they can email Sue Richards or call her at 919-816-3776.
If the club would like to use the paper application they can download it from our website. It is also necessary to have a Disaster Plan which can also be downloaded from our website.

These numbers are based on the rare possibility that 1st through 4th placements and qualifying runs are earned for all 165 jump heights + levels + classes. Numbers may need to be adjusted for the Qualifying (Q) ribbons in relationship to Total Runs of your actual agility Trial.
HOW TO FIGURE THE RIBBON COUNT
Formula: # of jump heights X # of class levels X # of classes = Total#1 JUMP HEIGHTS
- Regular classes jump heights 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 26 = 6
- Preferred classes jump heights 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 = 5
- Total = 11
#2 LEVELS (includes preferred)
Novice A, Novice B, Open, Exc A, Exc B = 5
#3 CLASSES
JWW, STD, FAST = 3Formula: # of jump heights X # of levels X # of classes = total
Equation: 11 x 5 x 3 = 165** If mixed breed classes are included, then double this amount.
HOW TO FIGURE THE PER DAY AMOUNTS
- 1st place 80% of total (80% x 165 = 132)
- 2nd place 60% of total (60% x 165 = 99)
- 3rd place 40% of total (40% x 165 = 66)
- 4th place 20% of total (20% x 165 = 33)
- Q's 4 times total (4 x 165 = 660) **
- Double Q (15% x 165 = 25)
- Title (20% x 165 = 33)
- MACH 2
- PAX 1
Formula: Then multiply the percentage totals by the number of days.
Equation: If the Club is not having mixed breed classes, then here is the total ribbons they need for a 2 day show:- 1st place 264 (same number for amount of toys to order)
- 2nd place 198
- 3rd place 132
- 4th place 66
- Q's 1,320 **
- Double Q 50
- Title 66
- MACH 4 (ribbons and poles)
- PAX 2 (ribbons and poles)
** These numbers are based on unlimited entries. To get a realistic quantity for Qualifying (Q) ribbons, review the number of Total Runs for all days combined of the actual Agility Trial. Multiply that times 80% for total number Qualifying (Q) Ribbons to order.
REMEMBER: If the Club is offering agility for mixed breeds, then double the amount.

Of course you can! It's best if you are an experienced Scribe and have some familiarity with the Timer Console. If you are completely new to the game, you can learn by sitting with a volunteer who has done the task before.
About eScribe #1
You must have prior Scribe experience and we are happy to teach you eScribe which is done ringside (as usual) on a keypad attached to a computer. It is helpful if you have a general comfort level with a computer keyboard and mouse or touch pad.
About eScribe #2 + Timer
eScribe + Timer is a one-person position who must have prior Scribe and Timer experience. Recording of faults is done with pen and paper on a Fault Sheet similar to how it used to be done on Scribe Sheets. Timer Console is checked to be sure eyes are on and in alignment; and that it starts, continues to run, and stops as expected.
In F.A.S.T., three people are needed because Timer is started by hand for each run and the Console settings are changed at designated height and class changes.
A Little History about eScribe
eScribe (electronic scribing) was created by Steve Herwig, AKC Agility Field Rep & Event Analyst. Since 2007, it has been in use at the AKC Nationals, Invitationals, and the World Team Tryouts.
Judges' calls for exhibitors' runs are scored using a computer and a customized keypad. The Timer Console is plugged directly into the computer and run times are entered automatically. The scores are picked up by a wireless connection to the Secretary computer at approximately 60 second intervals.
In 2011, I (Zee Marie) asked Steve if I could please use it at local agility trials. Upon approval from AKC (along with close monitoring) and updates to the code to include scoring for the Table obstacle, plus F.A.S.T and Time 2 Beat classes, we first used it at the STCA trial on October 8-9, 2011. It was well received, and we were given approval to use it at the next trial.
Steve and I have been working together to make updates where desired, and it just keeps getting better. AKC has given approval for me to continue to use eScribe, and it continues to be well received by judges, exhibitors, and volunteers alike.
Some benefits:
- Run time is no longer entered by hand; only if there is a problem with the Timer Console itself.
- Scribe notations are no longer entered by hand. Edits are only made at the request of the judge.
- Discrepancies between Scribe #1 and Scribe #2 are resolved ringside after each run and include clarification from the judge when needed.
- Fault Logs are printed with multiple runs on a sheet of paper instead of Scribe Sheets (one run per sheet) saving paper, toner, wear and tear on a printer, electricity, and so on.
- Audit Logs are printed for the judge which are easy to review and saves a lot of time compared to reviewing Scribe Sheets.
- A Results laptop may be used to display results typically within 60 seconds of an exhibitor's run. In addition, this laptop can be combined with a Dymo Duo Turbo Label Printer for print-on-demand armband and ribbon labels.

Acquiring parks is the responsibility of the Club hosting the agility trial. The Parks & Recreation Departments for the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, and Clark County have requested that they interact with a single person from the Club to make this multi-stepped and time-consuming task more efficient. Please contact LVDICE to assist with this matter.

Vegas Vouchers are owned by LVDICE. The purpose of Vegas Vouchers is to get people involved and promote the agility trials we have here locally in Southern Nevada. For trials that are done in cooperation with LVDICE, clubs have the option to:
- Accept Vegas Vouchers toward agility trial exhibitor entry fees
- Issue Vegas Vouchers to volunteers at agility trials
How it works is that a club may accept Vegas Vouchers towards entry fees. After the closing date of the trial, the club will redeem the Vegas Vouchers to LVDICE. LVDICE will issue the club a check for the amount of the Vegas Vouchers. This is a win-win situation for the club and LVDICE. The club gets their money, and the people who have Vegas Vouchers can use them towards the clubs' agility trials.
How clubs get started to accept and/or issue Vegas Vouchers
- The club signs a contract with LVDICE to participate in the Vegas Vouchers program.
- The club will accept Vegas Vouchers towards entry fees.
- LVDICE prints and issues Vegas Vouchers to club to use for their workers which are good for 13 months.
- After the trial is over, the difference between issued Vegas Vouchers and accepted Vegas Vouchers is calculated.
- If more Vegas Vouchers were accepted than issued, LVDICE pays the club the difference.
- If more Vegas Vouchers were issued than accepted, the Club pays LVDICE the difference.
- Then 14 months after the trial, any Vegas Vouchers that were issued by the Club and are still outstanding (not redeemed back) will be paid back to the Club.
Benefits
LVDICE does not create income from doing Vegas Vouchers. In fact, the Treasurer (a volunteer position) manages the LVDICE Vegas Vouchers account and LVDICE pays for the cost of producing the Vegas Vouchers. The benefit is that Vegas Vouchers helps get volunteer people to work the trials and this in turn benefits the clubs. This also helps the clubs in getting people to enter our agility trials because they have Vegas Vouchers to be used toward their entry fees. Additionaly, our local trainers accept Vegas Vouchers as payment toward their classes. Once again, it is a win-win situation for everyone!

This is the person in charge of setting the equipment in the rings according to the layout of the course maps provided by the judge. There are multiple course changes throughout the day.
- You must have experience reading a coordinates map. If you can pull a tape measure out and roll a measuring wheel, you can easily learn how to do it.
- Early arrival each trial day is a must for this position.
- At the end of the day you will need to preset the courses (flagging) for the following day with map coordinates only.
- Once a course has been built, you walk around the ring with the Judge as they wheel the path and you tweak as they direct.
- We typically setup two rings, so when a course build is completed in one ring, you begin building the next course.
- Assist the Equipment Manager with the unload and load of the equipment trailer.
-
This person is responsible for assigning volunteers to specific tasks.
-
Create documentation that is printed and posted at the trials so volunteers (usually exhibitors) know what tasks they are providing in which ring and which class(es). It is favorable for this person to have a computer or access to a computer and basic knowledge of Excel or the willingness to learn.
- From the opening date to the date of the trial, exhibitors and their friends submit forms online noting their availability to volunteer for tasks they prefer. Upon submit, a copy of this form is sent to you.
- Once the agility trial has closed, the Trial Secretary assigns armband numbers to the exhibitors, generates a Volunteers Report, and then emails this to you along with an Excel spreadsheet template to work with to make this task easy for you.
- The Volunteers Report clarifies which tasks the exhibitors have volunteered for and which classes they are running in. You assign volunteers according to the tasks they chose and avoiding the classes they are running in.
- You send the completed documentation to the Agility Trial Secretary who will post it on the website with the Confirmation Letter. An email is sent to the exhibitors about this letter and that the Volunteer Sheet is available for review.
- If someone contacts you for a change, you update the Excel spreadsheet and email the revised file to the Trial Secretary.
- Print at least four copies of the Volunteer spreadsheet and bring it with you to the trial.
- On the day(s) of the trial, post one copy of the Volunteer spreadsheet on the table near the Trial Secretary's setup where exhibitors will look to see if open spaces are available for tasks which need volunteers. They will typically fill these in themselves. Check this sheet often to update your own copy. Post one copy at each ring, and the last copy is for you to keep, typically on a clip board.
- On the day(s) of the trial, make sure the volunteers are in attendance and remind them where they agreed to work. If someone is not present, secure another volunteer to fill the position.
- Before each class, call out to volunteers to take their places in the ring and when applicable, give them a Vegas Voucher, meal ticket, or raffle ticket to each volunteer.
-
Create documentation that is printed and posted at the trials so volunteers (usually exhibitors) know what tasks they are providing in which ring and which class(es). It is favorable for this person to have a computer or access to a computer and basic knowledge of Excel or the willingness to learn.
-
There are no advanced tasks for this job; it is all done on the subject days of trial. Some of these tasks are done by several people, and typically one person at the trial site for those tasks performed during a trial.
This person is responsible for:
-
Providing or aquiring the transporting of the equipment trailer roundrip to and from the trial site.
- It is a requirement that the towing vehicle is equipment with electronic trailer brakes to haul the trailer.
- The person driving the two vehicle is required to provide information to the Club so that they may be added to the Club's insurance policy.
-
Check trailer and equipment.
-
Trailer and some contents need to be checked prior to traveling for:
- Equipment stability
- Securing factors
- Battery packs for the power drivers (drills) need to be fully charged
-
Trailer and some contents need to be checked prior to traveling for:
- Create post-trial list of any equipment in need of repair, replacement of supplies used, and then send (email is fine) the final inventory accounting to the Club.
- Return of the trailer and keys to the appropriate club member.
-
At the trial:
- First person to arrive at the trial site each day typically two (2) hours before judging starts. Unlock the gates and trailer.
- Setup the generator for the Agility Trial Secretary.
- Engage a group of people for set up which is usually the afternoon prior to the first day of the trial, sometimes early morning the first day of the trial.
- Make certain the equipment is in good condition and properly assembled.
- Make certain all equipment and accessories are in their place each day of the trail.
- Secure equipment in the trailer such as the timing equipment, ribbons, and generator at the end of each day.
- Post trial loading of the trailer includes securing the equipment properly. There is a binder in the trailer outlining this procedure.
-
Providing or aquiring the transporting of the equipment trailer roundrip to and from the trial site.
-
Event Committee Members must be club members. Minimum of five (5) required on site, including chairman; the trial secretary may be on the committee only if they are a member of the club.
The members help with answering on-location exhibitor questions and in the event of a more serious issue, hold a trial committee hearing to determine the best way to manage the issue.
Following is news the Agility Trial Secretary receives from time-to-time with details.
September 15, 2011
Event Committee Reminders: If you are working with a club that receives a complaint and after they investigate it they decide the complaint does not meet the criteria to hold a trial committee hearing, they still need to submit their minutes, the written complaint & the procedural checklist (as far as it was done) to Jack Norton so it is on-file at the AKC office. This shows that the committee did their job and investigated the complaint.
It's just like if the committee fills out the form to disqualify a dog and then decide not to, they still send in the form to AKC to show they did their job and investigated the incident. In most cases with things of this type, just be sure to tell them that they need to send a copy of everything to AKC, so that AKC knows the committee properly handled the situation and has the information on file if someone calls or writes in with a question about it.

Gate Steward is responsible for calling handlers with their dogs to the ring, on deck, and in the ring. Gate Sheets with the Running Order is provided to manage this task.
September 15, 2011 as per AKC Agility Trial Secretaries' Newsletter
Separating Multiple Dogs with Same Handler on the Gate Sheet: If a handler has multiple dogs within the same jump height, those dogs may be separated to allow for adequate spacing between runs, including moving one of the dogs to the start of a prior jump height. It is important that the run order of the dogs within the same jump height does not change, however it is ok to move a dog out of order (i.e. in front of or behind) another dog/same handler that is in a different jump height.
Example: A handler is showing dogs "a" and "b" in the 26 inch jump height class and also one dog "c" in the 24 inch jump height class. Dog "a" may be moved to run between when the 20s conclude and the 24s begin, thus giving that handler more time between runs. This process keeps the ring from waiting on that handler to switch dogs when the 26 jump height is running. It does not matter if dog "a" is now in front of dog "c" so long as the dogs within the same jump height class did not switch in order (i.e. dog "b" may not be put between the 20s and 24s).
When entries first close we ask that Trial Secretaries continue to provide as much space as possible within a jump height for handlers who are running multiple dogs. If additional space is still desired the exhibitor should discuss the options that are available with the judge, as it is the judge who is responsible for any gate sheet changes during the trial weekend.

Responsible for providing beverages and food at the trial stie. All out of pocket expenses for groceries and supplies are reimbursed by the Club with your receipts. Funds can be issued in advance of your shopping trip.
- This position requires that you tend to the hospitality needs throughout the day as you will be responsible for managing supplies, food, and the distribution of food.
- Foods need to be fresh so shopping is recommended two to three days before the first day of the trial.
- The Club keeps an inventory of the paper and plastic products and you would be informed if you needed to purchase paper products, plastic utensils, condiments, etc.
- Go to the market and purchase all necessary items including fresh foods and supplies. A Club member will give you a supplies list.
- Purchase the ice on your way to the site daily.
- You plan the meals, prepare, and serve them.*
-
Set up the hospitality area early. Exhibitors will arrive between one and one-and-a-half hours before the first run, therefore, we recommend you arrive two hours before the first run so that the hot water is fully heated (this takes quite a while) and that the continental breakfast is set out in time for the exhibitors.
- Since it is open to all in attendance you do not have to monitor it every moment.
- You do need to watch that there is enough food and hot water readily available.
-
The lunches and drinks are limited to the workers and these items must be monitored.
- Because all exhibitors have free access to the morning food some think the afternoon food is free as well. Signs are posted about lunch to provide clarity.
- Exhibitors that have volunteered earn a lunch ticket which they will present to you. Please collect these as they are given to you.
- When serving the lunch meal, keep portion size in mind to be certain there is enough for every volunteer.
- Clean up the hospitality area and the items you use such as any food containers and utensils.
Shopping list and suggested menus will be posted here soon.
* You may consider ordering in, and these orders must be pre-approved by the club and kept within budget.

This position has numerous tasks; fortunately most can be accomplished in the peace and tranquility of your own home. Ideally, these tasks are started about a year in advance of the trial date(s).
AKC requires that the Trial Chairperson is a member of the local club. While NADAC does not, it is still preferable that the Trial Chairperson is a member of the local club (LVDICE). It's the best way to stay informed about the local agility trial events, and a great place to make friends!
Trial Chairperson must be in attendance every day of the trial event during trial hours.
- Choose the trial date. While it is the Trial Chairperson's responsibility to select the agility trial dates, most of them are consistent from year to year. With AKC, clubs are assigned the same date weekends each year; any variance from this needs to be pre-approved by the Club and then by AKC. For example, in 2012 the AKC Agility National Championships is in Reno, NV on the same weekend as is assigned to the Club. The Trial Chairperson for that event has written to AKC asking permission to move that weekend back by one week so that the local event is not in conflict with the national event and those attending the national event have the opportunity to attend the local event.
- Get approval from the organization (AKC, NADAC, CPE, etc.). This is accomplished by completing and submitting an Agility Event Application to the organization. Trial Chairperson may request this to be done by the Agility Trial Secretary or seek assistance from another club member familiar with the application process. Typically the previous year's application can be a good guide for acquiring the information to be submitted.
- Will there be any special attractions?
- AKC Special Attractions Application (.pdf 57K)
- Will the club or associated club(s) be holding additional events such as confirmation, obedience, and rally? If yes, other applications may apply if the same person is the Trial Chairperson for these events, and at minimum, let the Agility Trial Secretary know so the information can be put in the Premium List.
- Will there be any special attractions?
- Secure a trial site. For trial dates determined way in advance (over a year), it is usually the club that acquires the trial site when it reserves a site for many weekends at the same time. However, for trials that are determined less than a year, it may be the responsibility of the Trial Chairperson to verify the site arrangements with the club, and acquire them if need be. Considerations for a trial site may include:
- Outdoor trial setup requires 270' x 200' of a flat area.
- Outdoor Trial Setup Example (.pdf 275K)
- For each new location, AKC requires that an AKC Agility Site Evaluation Form (.doc 737K) be submitted.
- Adequate amount of parking. The number of spaces needed can be given to you by the Club's history or expectation of the number of persons who will be attending the event.
- Is overnight and RV parking allowed?*
- If yes, is a permit needed by the City's Parks & Recreation Department or the Police Department?
- If yes, how many vehicles can fit in the available space?
- Are there hookups for electric and dump available?
- Can overnight parking folks stay the last night of the trial and if yes, what time do they need to leave the next morning?
- Are onsight bathrooms available? If not, portapotties will need to be rented.
- If outdoors, is the location protected by a fence that can be secured overnight? If not, security services will need to be acquired.
- If indoors, what is the running surface and will an applied running surface need to be considered?
- Are lights available if the trial runs past sunset?*
- Is the Club allowed to setup the afternoon before a trial?*
- Is water available?*
- Is electricity available?*
- How many trash receptacles are available?
- Outdoor trial setup requires 270' x 200' of a flat area.
* If yes, is there an additional cost?
- Secure judge(s) for the trial. The club and trial secretary will guide the Trial Chairperson in regard to the number of judges to be hired and choice of judge(s). When two judges are needed, the club prefers to hire couples (and they like that too) to save time and money. Communications with judges is done via email and phone well in advance of the trial date. Judges supply their own contracts or agreements.
- Make the lodging** (hotel, motel, inn, etc.) arrangements for the judge(s). The clubs have a few venues they use most often and are chosen primarily for their proximity to the agility event location, or on the way to the agility event location by the person who is in charge of transporting the judge. Transportation is often times provided by the Trial Chairperson and may be another volunteer at the request of the Trial Chairperson. It is appreciated to keep lodging costs to a minimum and to ask venues about special offers.
- Arrange judge(s) transportation. This can be a private vehicle of the Trial Chairperson or through other volunteers, taxi service, or having the judge rent a car which the Club pays for:
- To and from the airport
- To and from the trial site
- To and from any dinners or functions
- Arrange dinner that the Club sponsors for the judge(s). Some judges like to dine with the club every night they are here, other judges like just one night, and some prefer to be on their own and explore Las Vegas. Have a discussion with the judge(s) before they arrive to determine their preference. The club will pay for the judges meal(s). All others who attend the meal(s) pay for themselves. We do our best to keep the meal at a reasonable cost. Whoever is taking the judge out (typically the Trial Chairperson) pays for the meal and gets reimbursed by the club. Typically agility trial event volunteers and club members are invited to attend dinner with the judge.
- Secure all other key volunteer positions. Reach out to club members who are familiar with these positions, or exhibitors who often attend the events, or to students training in agility who would like to learn. Positions needed for each and every agility trial event include:
- Trial Secretary
- Equipment Manager
- Equipment trailer transportation is often provided by the Equipment Manager and not always. Towing vehicle is required to have an electronic breaking system installed, and covered by the Club's insurance plan.
- Chief Course Builder
- Chief Ring Steward
- Hospitality
- Acquire a security guard for the nights the equipment remains at the site after the day’s agility trial. Some locations can be locked and do not require this service.
- Make sure a club member has checked the inventory of toys, ribbons, awards, and trophies well in advance (at least 12 weeks) of the trial date. If necessary request that additional inventory be ordered by the club.
- Purchase gift for the judge, $25 limit. We usually give a $25 gift card to Petsmart, Petco, or Clean Run. Learn more about the judge and where they live, so you can adjust the gift to their likes or needs. If giving a Petsmart or Petco card, make sure there is a store close to their home.
- Familiarity with the organizations' guidelines or rules about Dealing with Misconduct
- Knowledge of the Organization's or the Club’s policy concerning Emergency Procedures at Events (Disaster and Emergency Plan)
NOTE: GACGLV and LVDICE offer $30.00 worth of Vegas Vouchers per trial day for fulfilling this key position. This offer is subject to change at the Club's or Trial Chairperson's discretion.
**ABOUT LODGING: GACGLV and LVDICE
- We have used the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas most often and have found inexpensive rates online. It is located downtown where it is convenient for the transportation volunteer coming from the north end of town to pick up the judge on the way to the agility trial. It is also convenient for the judge as there is a lot to do downtown.
- The next most popular spot we've used is the Fiesta in Henderson as it is close to the trial. Recently, rates have gone up so look for specials.
- We've also used Hawthorne Inn & Suites on Boulder Highway.

ARMBAND DISTRIBUTION and the DOGS TO BE MEASURED LIST
Trial secretaries should continue to separate armbands of those who need measuring from self-service check-in so that the armband is not distributed until such time that the dog either gets a measurement or the exhibitor advises that a valid jump height card exists. The exhibitor does not have to show the card; they simply have to ask for their armband stating that they currently have a valid measurement. If an entry form comes in with no jump height card notification attached (e.g. none of the boxes are checked or a form without the boxes is used), please place the dog on the club’s Dogs To Be Measured List report until such time that the exhibitor states otherwise. In this manner, the responsibility is upon the exhibitor to communicate that a card exists or they must get their dog measured.
Please realize these processes help protect the exhibitor by reminding them a measurement may be needed.
-
If your dog is under the age of two years as of the trial’s date: One (1) temporary measurement is required. Once measured, be sure to retain the Agility Measurement Form yellow copy and check “My dog has a Temporary Jump Height Form” box, otherwise your dog needs to be measured. If your dog turns two years of age or is older as of the trial’s date, your temporary measurement expires on their 2nd birthday and your dog needs to be measured.
If your dog is the age of two years or older as of the trial’s date: A minimum of two (2) permanent measurements are required. If both permanent measurements place your dog into the same jump height class, the AKC office will issue you a permanent card. If not, then a third measurement is required to determine the dog’s jump height class. Until such time that you have received all required measurements for a permanent jump height card, check the “My dog needs to be measured” box. Upon arrival at the trial, you must check to see if there is a Volunteer Measuring Official and/or an Agility Field Rep. present to perform official measurements. If not, and you posses a yellow copy of the Agility Measurement Form from a previous measurement, then your armband may be picked up during Check-In in lieu of being measured by the judge of record. Once you have received your permanent card from the AKC office, check the “My dog has a Permanent Jump Height Card” box on all future entry forms.
Exception to the 2 permanent measurement requirement: If your dog measures over 22 inches at the withers, you have the option of selecting the “Over 22” Reqst Perm” box at the top left corner of the Agility Measurement Form to receive a permanent jump height card from AKC after a single measurement. If you do so, please also sign below the checkbox. By doing so, you are giving up your right to have a 2nd measurement performed on your dog in the future; however, you are not giving up your right to have the challenge measurement process performed in the future. Once you have received your permanent card from the AKC office, check the “My dog has a Permanent Jump Height Card” box on all future entry forms.

Yes, it's true! Effective January 1, 2010, exhibitors are no longer required to provide proof to Trial Secretaries that their dog has a valid jump height card as part of the check-in process. Furthermore, this change eliminates the need for a copy of the jump height card to be submitted with an entry form.
If a dog is measured by an AKC Field Representative or Volunteer Measuring Official (VMO) and is now eligible to jump in a lower height class, the measurement is effective immediately for any future runs, including any runs (regular or preferred class) which have not yet occurred on the same day that the measurement is recorded. This immediate action does not apply to measurements taken as part of completing the challenge measurement process.
A new section has been added at the top right of the entry form whereas the exhibitor shall designate whether their dog needs to be on the Club’s Dogs To Be Measured List by simply checking one of the three available options:
- My dog needs to be measured
- My dog has a Temporary Jump Height Form
- My dog has a Permanent Jump Height Card
Revisions to the Regulations for Agility Trials
Effective January 1, 2010- This insert is issued as a supplement to the Regulations for Agility Trials (.pdf 27K)
-
Yes, each dog may go through the challenge process once after the age of two (2) years, if requested by the owner. (Any dogs under the age of two (2) years are also eligible for a challenge measurement.)
-
When filling out the entry form, there is a new section at the top of the form for exhibitors to designate whether your dog has a valid jump height card or if your dog needs to be measured. Please check the appropriate box so that the Trial Secretary knows whether to include your dog on the Dogs To Be Measured List. It is no longer required that you submit a copy of your dog’s jump height card with your entry form or show it during day of show check-in.
-
If your dog has been measured by an AKC Field Representative or Volunteer Measuring Official (VMO) and is now eligible to jump in a lower height class, the measurement is effective immediately including any runs (regular or preferred class) which have not yet occurred on the same day that the measurement is recorded. This immediate action does not apply to measurements taken as part of completing the challenge measurement process. Dogs who measure into a higher jump height have always been required to be moved immediately.
-
The jump height card challenge process replicates the original measurement steps. A minimum of two (2) challenge measurements are required. If both challenge measurements place your dog into the same jump height class, then you will be issued a new permanent card from the AKC office. If the two challenge measurements place the dog in different jump height classes, then a third challenge measurement is required to determine the dog’s jump height class.
Until such time that you have received all required challenge measurements, you must continue to compete at the original jump height stated on the permanent jump height card that is in your possession.
It is the sole responsibility of the exhibitor to have their original, official jump height card or temporary jump height form at each trial to present upon request. Additionally, if a measurement is necessary, it is the exhibitor’s responsibility to have their dog measured prior to running. Regulations for Agility Trials, Chapter 2, Section 4.

The clubs do not need to do anything with AKC if they have already applied to allow mixed breeds to compete at their events. However, if a club wishes to add mixed breeds to an all breed event that previously was not offering mixed breeds, they should contact their AKC Event Operations representative to amend their event application.

The following announcement was sent to Agility Trial Secretaries on Friday, January 29, 2010
MIXED BREEDS ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE AT THE CLUB’S OPTION AT ALL BREED TRIALS
We are pleased to inform you of a decision made by the AKC Board at the January 11, 2010 meeting, which will enhance the AKC Canine Partners program. This exciting new program allows mixed breed dog owners to list their dogs and participate in all breed AKC Agility, Obedience and Rally events starting April 1, 2010.
While each club’s participation in the AKC Canine Partners program will remain voluntary, clubs may now choose to allow mixed breed participation at any all breed AKC Agility, Obedience or Rally event. This change eliminates the need for events to be standalone events. Additionally, mixed breeds will compete in the same classes and earn the same titles as their purebred counterparts. Separate mixed breed classes and placements are no longer required or allowed. All owners of mixed breed dogs must first obtain an AKC Canine Partners listing number before they may enter an AKC event. Mixed breed dogs entered in events must have the breed on the entry form listed as “Canine Partner” (mixed breed) and not as a breed hybrid.

If the dog is entered in the preferred classes, then they must jump in the height they measure into. If the change is because the dog was recently measure by a VMO or Field Rep, then the entry must be changed to the appropriate height.

Effective April 1, 2010 optional mixed breed classes may be offered at standalone all-breed AKC agility trials. A standalone agility event is defined as an agility trial that is not held on the same date and show site as an AKC All-Breed Dog Show or Independent Specialty for conformation. Clubs are not required to offer these optional classes.Mixed breed dogs shall compete in separate (but equivalent) classes from purebreds. (Novice A Mixed Breed, Novice B Mixed Breed, etc.) All dogs competing in a jump height run at the same time, under the same judge, however placements and titles are scored and awarded separately.

Absolutely not, in fact, it may be to your advantage for your steady and true dog. Many of these dogs win a qualifying score and placement!
Here's what one competitor has to share (sent September 12, 2011):
I felt that T2B was not for me because I run a 12 inch dog that qualifies, but we usually don't get first, second or third place. I ran it for the first time this past weekend, and what I learned about T2B is that you don't have to have a fast dog to qualify or even win.
Due to the name of the game, it gives the impression your dog must be fast in order to even consider entering this new AKC class. While this is true to a point for any of the AKC classes, there are other things to consider.
- First of all the course is designed for speed — nice flowing, non-trappy, non-technical course.
- Speed is NOT everything. You MUST run clean. So many handlers focused on speed trying to beat the time of the dog before them that dogs were not qualifying because handlers pushed their dogs and that resulted in runs with faults.
- Refusals are not called, therefore, you only lose time and you don't get a fault.
My 12 inch dog ended up with second place and 8 T2B points because we were clean and had the second fastest clean run! I recommend it. Give it a go. It is a fun game and a great warm up for your standard and jumpers classes when offered before them. Whether it's first in the day's running order, in the middle, or last, it's worth doing.

Day-to-Day Move-Ups: Yes, it is permissible for an exhibitor to request a day-to-day move-up in person for the following day on a trial day of which they did not show their dog.
Example: A club is offering three days of agility on a trial weekend; Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Exhibitor only entered Saturday and Sunday. They may fill out a day-to-day move-up form on-site on Friday for Saturday and Sunday, even though they did not enter the trial on Friday.
Day-to-day move-ups may not be requested via the phone or by email. The exhibitor may have someone else on-site fill out and sign the form as their representative.

No. Taking a piece of the “show” equipment out on setup day and letting an exhibitor practice on it would be considered training on the show grounds and would expose both the exhibitor and club to sanctions. As the newsletter states, the purpose of the change was specific – i.e. to allow for classes normally held at that facility to continue. This is not the case.
Perhaps the hosting Club would let the exhibitor borrow the equipment before the trial weekend, for use at their home or at a training facility. We certainly understand needing to work through an obstacle fear issue.
Following is an excerpt from the April 11, 2011 AKC Agility Trial Secretaries Newsletter:
Training on the Show Grounds
There has been an issue brought to AKC’s attention regarding the recent regulation change to the Regulations for Agility Trials, Chapter 1, Section 15 Training on Show Grounds. Clubs have contacted AKC to state that exhibitors have felt it is now allowable for them to practice on the club’s equipment on the day preceding an event because the regulation changed to say training on the equipment is not allowed beginning at 12:00 a.m. the day of the trial. This is not the case.
AKC has not changed the requirements to allow “fun matches” or “show and go’s” and the requirements regarding these can be found in the Match Regulations, Chapter 1, Section 3. “Fun Matches. A fun match is an informal dog event that is not approved by The American Kennel Club as a sanctioned match. These events are commonly held by clubs that are not on the records of The American Kennel Club as being eligible to conduct sanctioned matches, dog shows, agility or obedience/rally trials. Once a club becomes eligible to hold AKC sanctioned matches, it may not conduct fun matches unless entries are restricted to members of the club. Any event for which the club solicits or accepts entries from non-members must be approved by AKC as a sanctioned match.”
The Regulations for Agility Trials state in Chapter 4, Section 15, "Training on Show Grounds. No agility obstacle training is allowed on the show grounds except for the use of the warm-up jump. No training is allowed on the trial equipment from 12:00 a.m. the day of the trial, to at least one (1) hour after the completion of the trial (on the last day of any set of trials)."
The emphasised text that changed still does not allow agility obstacle training on the show grounds and was implemented to allow clubs/facilities the ability to hold their training classes the night before a club’s trial without impacting their normal training schedule. Previously clubs were impacting the rental facilities training schedules due to their trial requirements.
Clubs are not allowed to hold fun runs at an event site on the equipment unless they apply with the American Kennel Club to hold a Sanctioned Match. Clubs may submit an application to hold a Sanctioned B Match and AKC will process and approve it for an upcoming event, or the club could apply to hold a Special Attraction offering the Time 2 Beat class for the upcoming event.
The employees of the American Kennel Club do not have the ability to over-ride or provide an exception to the regulations and rules, only the AKC Board of Directors can approve changes to such regulations and rules at their general meetings.

AKC rules state that the Exhibitor Run Orders cannot be published in advance in which the names of the handlers and dogs are included. While a running order can be posted with armband numbers and breed prior to the event, we have found this to be lacking the information exhibitors are seeking, e.g. who the exhibitor is following. Therefore, Exhibitor Run Orders are printed and available at the agility trials.

Typically they run one ring at a time, alternating between Ring 1 and Ring 2. Be sure to check the Confirmation Letter which is posted after closing of each trial on this website.

We bought the vertical strings every 6" with the double stake for better stability. We got both the 164 ft and 84ft with and extra poles with the intention of cutting the fencing to meet our exact measurements for a 100 x 120 ring. We bought 3' height (8/35/6) for agility and 4' height (9/42/6) for obedience and rally rings.
